A major outbreak of severe thunderstorms will unleash life-threatening weather over the nation's midsection Wednesday into Wednesday night. Tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds, large hail and blinding downpours will issue from storms erupting between the Great Lakes and the southern Plains.
Triggering the storm outbreak will be a cold front quickly sweeping southeastward over the Plains. The storms will break out in earnest Wednesday afternoon from Wisconsin to eastern Kansas. From here, the outbreak will proceed southward and eastward from the Lower Peninsula of Michigan to Oklahoma.
The threat of severe weather will be highest in the afternoon into evening in Chicago, Milwaukee and Kansas City. At Saint Louis and Oklahoma City, the threat of violent weather will be highest beginning on Wednesday evening.
At least a few tornadoes will happen during this severe thunderstorm outbreak with highest tornado threat likely to focus upon Illinois and Missouri. There will be instances of damaging wind of over 60 mph and of large hail exceeding 1 inch in diameter.
