Tornado Facts you May not Know

On average, May has the greatest frequency of tornadoes while June finishes a close second. The most tornadoes for one month since records have been kept is 543 in May 2003. The worst tornado outbreak ever occurred on April 3-4, 1974, when 148 twisters struck from the Gulf states to Michigan. The deadliest tornado was the tri-state storm on March 18, 1925. It killed 695 people and injured 2,027.

The top five states with the greatest incidence of tornadoes (based on an average per year) are Texas with 134, Oklahoma with 58, Kansas with 56, Florida with 51 and Nebraska with 43. The five states with the fewest tornadoes are Alaska, Rhode Island, Hawaii, Vermont and Oregon.
