Thunderstorms packing damaging winds and hammering hail will rock areas of the central and southern Great Plains into Saturday night as markedly diverse air masses clash.
Sparked by unusual chill over the northern Plains versus a shot of summery heat farther south, the strongest thunderstorms will erupt over an area spanning much of Iowa and Kansas, the eastern half of Nebraska and northwestern Missouri. This area will also reach southward over western Oklahoma to West Texas.
Cities at risk of severe local weather will include Omaha, Des Moines and even greater Kansas City.
The threat of damaging winds above 60 mph and hail to at least 1 inch will be highest with scattered severe thunderstorms during the first half of the night.
